Have you stocked your stash? “Cez bro baahar nahi mil rahi hai.” Well, when Prime Minister Modi announced the nation-wide lockdown owing to the spread of coronavirus in the country, the first thing I did was grab those fast disappearing cigarette packets from my nearby tapri. Yeah, yeah, fine. We do not endorse smoking or consumption of alcohol in any form but for those who do things are going really hard man.
First, I have to stay indoors and see my dad sipping his morning tea with a Marlboro Advance between his fingers. I can’t even ask for a drag and trust me; it hurts more than a breakup. Second, even if you manage to smoke or have a peg, the prices are rising faster than you pour that Chivas Regal in your glass. And, here’s why:
Amidst the lockdown, there is a potential shortage of essential commodities and hence, their prices are being continuously monitored by the authorities. But since those ciggies and liquor are not essential commodities, traders are free to charge whatever pleases them. In short, lag gaye hain bro.
A quarter bottle of liquor is being sold for somewhere between Rs 400 to Rs 500 and the cost of a pack of cigarettes, well, wait for it, around Rs 250 to Rs 350. This is to do with the crippled supply chain because of the current lockdown and hence, they are being sold for double or triple the original price in the black market.
And things don’t stop just there. Crime is also becoming evident because of the current scenario. In a recent incident in Maharashtra’s Kalyan, two men allegedly killed a man as he refused to share the cigarette with them. WTF! Well, that actually happened. Seems like people have started losing their minds as the lockdown prevails.
According to the reports, the incident happened on Wednesday when a 38-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by two men near the APMC market as he denied giving them a cigarette.
The victim identified as Arvind Shankar Kumar was a vegetable seller and hailed from Uttar Pradesh. The Police suspected a shortage of cigarettes as the motive behind the crime since tobacco selling outlets have been shut down during the current lockdown.
Well, whatever be the reason, we urge people to stay indoors so as the nation can bounce back as soon as possible.
