While we were busy enjoying a lazy, breezy Sunday noon, we were jolted out of our weekend mood by an unbelievable news. Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput is no more. He was just 34 and too young to go.
For the outsiders (non-Bollywoodwaalahs), he was one of the best young talents in Bollywood whose career had been doing well and therefore, “why did he need to commit suicide?” Many are also linking it to the death of his former Manager Disha Salian, who also committed suicide on June 8.
However, one look at Sushant’s last post on Instagram, where he’s been a regular, penning his emotions out, hides something disturbing. His last post dated June 3 is dedicated to his mother, whom he lost in 2002. He had been extremely close to her and those who know Sushant would tell you how he’d been in and out of depression ever since.
In his post, Sushant wrote, “Blurred past evaporating from teardrops, Unending dreams carving an arc of smile. And a fleeting life, negotiating between the two… #माँ “
The words “And a fleeting life” are what we find unsettling. Was it a hint that no one cared to read, understand, and enquire about? The actor had been having a tough time the past couple of years. There have been gossip columns, blind items, and news aplenty about how his professional and personal lives.
Some of his promising projects were announced but never took off. The ones that did, didn’t find box office success (Chhichhore, Sonchiriya) or didn’t get a theatrical opening but lukewarm release and response on OTT (Drive).
On the personal front, while he was romantically linked with several Bollywood hotties, what no one knew was the heartbreaks that he was tending to. With Sushant Singh Rajput now gone, there will be many assumptions and yet, all of them could be true.
A life is lost and what it has left behind is a reminder of how important it is to look for signs, listen in, dig deep, and take more care of our people. It is hard to tell what is going on inside. But perhaps checking in can solve a few knots and save a few precious lives.
Meanwhile, condolences poured in from all quarters for the highly-talented actor. Expressing shock, Akshay Kumar tweeted, “I remember watching #SushantSinghRajput in Chhichhore and telling my friend Sajid, its producer how much I’d enjoyed the film and wish I’d been a part of it.”
Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging at his Bandra residence in Mumbai, and a domestic help alerted the police. A team of Bandra Police has rushed to investigate and details are awaited.
Ironically, Sushant’s death comes just barely a week after his former manager Disha Salian committed suicide last Monday by jumping off the 14th floor of her apartment in Mumbai. “It’s such devastating news. My deepest condolences to Disha’s family and friends. May your soul rest in peace,” Sushant had posted the message on social media back then.
